As part of the implementation of the project "Capacity building, production and dissemination of knowledge on the Burkinabe population", the Higher Institute of Population Sciences (ISSP) of Joseph-Ki-Zerbo University organized a gender training course from January 16 to 27, 2023 in Ouagadougou for health workers.

To develop the capacities of national actors for a better integration of gender in development policies, programs and projects; this is the objective of the gender training that took place from January 16 to 27, 2023. During these eleven days of training, the aim was to define the concept of gender, to understand the role of socialization in the construction of gender relations, to understand the gender and development approach and its challenges, to explain the relationship between gender and reproductive health.

It was also to identify the types of violence against women, to establish the relationship between gender and education and to use the methodological tools and legal instruments for an examination of gender issues in the education system.

According to Prof. Bassiahi Abdramane Soura, director of the ISSP, this training was organized within the framework of programs funded by the European Union.
"In addition to the activities, there is research that is conducted. There is also a component that consists of building the capacity of a number of actors in Burkina Faso, including executives from the administration and civil society. Several training themes have been selected, including gender and development. And it is this theme that brought together the learners for two weeks at ISSP. We are quite satisfied to see that people have been diligent during this training," said Professor Soura.

For Dr. Gnoumou Thiombiano, teacher-researcher at ISSP, the training was based on four modules. "An introductory module on gender and all related concepts, a module on gender and reproduction, a module on gender and violence against women and a module on gender and education. Many of them came in with a skeptical view of gender concepts, but at the end, they realize that their perceptions and opinions changed in two weeks of training. And they also testify that it is really useful," commented Dr. Gnoumou Thiombiano.

"To all of you, I would like to say thank you. Thank you for your contributions, your attitudes that are favorable to learning. Thank you for what each one of you has given to the group so that we all come out of this constructive adventure refreshed. Thank you to the trainers for sharing their knowledge, their significant involvement and their flexibility in the accompaniment. Thank you to ISSP for the initiative, which is very relevant and timely in the context of gender inequality issues in our country. May opportunities arise for us to see each other, and especially to apply the knowledge gained from this training. We are committed to gender-sensitive interventions," said Adissa Sokoto Derra, one of the beneficiaries of the training.

"We were lucky enough to benefit from the scholarship offered by the European Union, in collaboration with ISSP, for a gender training. I can say that it is a great opportunity that we had; and at the end of these two weeks of training, we are equipped in terms of knowledge and skills on everything related to gender," said Abdoulaye Segda, a doctoral student in biochemistry and participant in the training.
