Health pass mandatory in places of worship in Togo

According to a statement by Payadowa Boukpessi, the Togolese Minister of Territorial Administration of Decentralization and Development of Territories, from December 2021, Togolese will have to present a health pass before accessing places of worship. "The government specifies that access to places of worship is now subject to a vaccine pass against covid or a negative PCR test dating back 3 days. This measure, which will become effective from December 3, 2021, is essential to continue the fight against covid particularly in this period of preparation for the holidays, sources of large gatherings conducive to the spread of the coronavirus," reads the statement.

On the other hand, the Bishops' Conference of Togo, which has taken note of the decision on the health pass, called on the faithful to remain calm and to remain in prayer. However, the religious men announced that they have sent a note to the Ministry of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Development of Territories. The conference assures the faithful that it will disclose the response of the Togolese authorities.

It should be recalled that the Togolese government had taken the decision to close all places of worship throughout the country. This measure was strongly criticized by the Togolese episcopate. "The coercive measures taken by the authorities, such as the ban on access to public and administrative buildings without the vaccination card, the requirement to show proof of vaccination for the first time, and the ban on the use of the vaccination card, were all taken into account. The coercive measures taken by the authorities, such as banning access to public and administrative buildings without a vaccination card, the requirement to present proof of vaccination for the submission of identity card applications and for the legalisation of documents, etc., The bishops questioned whether these are not serious violations of the basic rights of citizens.
