Senegal/Sédhiou: An organization donates equipment to women's groups to strengthen climate resilience

On Saturday, the “Green Sédhiou” association, in partnership with the NGO Solthis and the Climate Resilience through Agroecology and Clean Energy program, presented women’s groups in the Moricounda neighborhood of the municipality of Sédhiou (in the south) with a set of equipment designed to support the fight against climate change.

The equipment includes, in particular, improved stoves called “Jambaar,” which use less wood for cooking and emit less CO2 into the atmosphere. Trash cans, wheelbarrows, rakes, and tree seedlings were also distributed to women’s groups in the municipality of Sédhiou.

Several stakeholders involved in the fight against climate change attended the ceremony.

The deputy prefect, Moctar Ndiaye, praised this initiative, which, in his view, reflects the “Green Sédhiou” association’s commitment to environmental preservation.

He noted that this equipment will enable the recipients to better manage household waste and reduce their consumption of charcoal and firewood, thereby contributing to the protection of natural resources.

Mr. Ndiaye also urged the recipients to maintain the equipment to ensure its durability for the benefit of the population.

For her part, the president of the Sédhiou women’s groups, Fatoumata Coly, expressed her satisfaction and reaffirmed the women’s commitment to continuing efforts to improve sanitation and protect the Moricounda neighborhood.

She noted that this donation constitutes “concrete support” for community initiatives aimed at climate resilience and the well-being of residents.
