France/ “Over time, Vire and Atlacomulco had drifted apart”: The sister-city relationship with the Mexican city has been revived

On August 6, 2026, a new official sister-city agreement was signed between Vire Normandie (Calvados) and the Mexican city of Atlacomulco. The relationship between the two cities began in 1979 but had been dormant for many years.

A famous avenue in Vire, Normandy (Calvados), is named after her. The city of Atlacomulco, Mexico, is in fact twinned with the capital of the Bocage region. This twinning was established in 1979, remained active for a few years, and then fell into obscurity. An effort to revive the partnership was launched in 2019, followed by another one just recently in August 2026.

Carolina Morvan, in particular, has worked to revive the relationship between the two cities. Over time, Vire and Atlacomulco had drifted apart. Reestablishing contact was not easy, given the distance, explains the city councilwoman—who is Mexican herself and has lived in Vire for thirty years.

A New Charter

On August 6, a new official twinning charter was signed via videoconference by the mayor of Vire, Normandy, Pascal Martin, and the mayor of Atlacomulco, Nicolas Martinez. The two municipalities hope to foster meetings between their representatives, exchanges between associations, schools, and citizens, as well as the organization of cultural and artistic events and the implementation of joint projects, according to the Vire municipal government. Cultural exchanges, a photo exhibition on the Mexican city, and the organization of sporting events could help bring this Franco-Mexican twinning to life.
