The decision to strengthen ties between Dakar and Jakarta was reached following an official meeting between officials from the two cities. On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Dakar Mayor Abass Fall welcomed Ardian Wicaksono, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Senegal, at City Hall.

The two authorities laid the groundwork for future collaboration and are now considering a Dakar-Jakarta sister-city partnership. This cooperation is expected to cover culture, crafts, education, sports, and the environment.

According to information provided by *Le Soleil* and Indonesian sources, Ardian Wicaksono also announced his country’s participation in the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games, scheduled for this coming October and November. Indonesia will take part in the Asian Village, which is part of the celebration program that the City of Dakar plans to develop.

In December 2025, the Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee had already convened decentralized administrative authorities—including the governors of the 14 regions and the prefects and subprefects of the host localities—to coordinate preparations for the event. This initiative concerned the territorial organization of the YOG and did not pertain to the proposed sister-city partnership between Dakar and Jakarta.

To structure the selected priorities, Abass Fall and Ardian Wicaksono agreed to establish a commission headed by the deputy mayor in charge of Cooperation, Khady Niang Sylla.
