A low-carbon prefabricated pipe manufacturing plant began operations in Adétikopé (north of Lomé) late last week. Led by BESSAC’s Togolese subsidiary, in partnership with PFO Construction, this new facility is expected to help accelerate the implementation of the RAINE project (Sewage Network Using Interceptors to Prevent Flooding in Our Areas), launched last year to strengthen flood control efforts in Greater Lomé.

Dedicated to the manufacture of low-carbon pipes, the plant has two goals: to reduce Togo’s dependence on imported construction materials and to develop a more environmentally friendly local supply chain. The equipment produced at the site will be used in several infrastructure projects, particularly in the areas of sanitation, drinking water supply, and urban development.

The establishment of this facility in Adétikopé, a rapidly expanding industrial zone, is part of the national strategy to strengthen the industrial base. “This facility will contribute to the creation of skilled jobs, the revitalization of the local economy, and the development of Togolese expertise,” said Séna Alipui, Deputy Minister for Water and Sanitation.

According to the project’s developers, the facility will produce, in its first year of operation, more than 2,200 jacking pipes with a diameter of 2,000 millimeters for the I5 and I6 interceptors of the RAINE project. More than 1,400 metric tons of steel will be processed there, and nearly 10,000 cubic meters of low-carbon concrete will be manufactured directly on site.

As a reminder, the RAINE project aims to sustainably improve stormwater management in Greater Lomé. The network currently being deployed will collect and redirect water to the Zio basin to reduce the risk of flooding in urban areas. The project relies on microtunneling technology, a horizontal drilling process that allows for the construction of underground tunnels with minimal impact on surface activities. The work is being carried out by BESSAC.
