The locality of Djègbadji, in the commune of Ouidah, hosted the inauguration ceremony for the Xwlajè local iodized salt production unit on Thursday May 21, 2026. Built as part of the Projet de Promotion du Sel Local Iodé (ProSel), this modern infrastructure represents an investment of over 600 million FCFA and marks an important step in the development of the salt industry in Benin.

Supported by the Ministry of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Employment Promotion, the project benefits from technical and financial backing from the IBSA Consortium (India-Brazil-South Africa) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This cooperation illustrates the willingness of partners to support Benin in initiatives that create jobs and wealth for local communities.

The ceremony took place in the presence of several political and administrative authorities, including Minister Modeste Tihounté KÉRÉKOU, the Mayor of Ouidah Christian Mawugnon HOUETCHENOU, UNDP Resident Representative Titus OSUNDINA and representatives of the various IBSA Consortium member states. Local authorities, technical and financial partners, crowned heads and beneficiary populations also took part in this major event.

ProSel aims to modernize iodized salt production in Benin, while improving working conditions for producers, particularly women's groups who are heavily involved in this activity. The inaugurated plant is equipped with modern processing, packaging and storage facilities that meet the health and quality standards demanded by the market.

The ceremony was marked by the symbolic cutting of the ribbon, followed by a guided tour of the facilities. Guests were shown the various stages of iodized salt production, from extraction to final packaging. A demonstration area and a stand for marketing the Xwlajè label were also presented to the public.

In their speeches, the authorities and partners hailed the project as a catalyst for strengthening the local economy and promoting employment for young people and women. With this new infrastructure, Djègbadji has established itself as a strategic hub for iodized salt production in Benin, a symbol of successful cooperation between the State, international partners and local communities.
