Canada

The federal, provincial and municipal governments are injecting $7.4 million to help create hundreds of new housing units in Tracadie, New Brunswick.

The money will be invested in the construction of new water supply infrastructure, including the drilling of a new well, the installation of a manganese treatment system and the construction of a two-kilometre water pipeline.

This work is necessary to enable housing projects to get underway in the municipality.

Without these investments, housing construction would be impossible. So it's going to be a big help to the municipality of Tracadie," said Serge Cormier, Member of Parliament for Acadie-Bathurst.

These improvements will make it possible to build up to 300 new housing units.

Serge Cormier notes that announcements in other municipalities are forthcoming.

Drinking water, a challenge in Tracadie

Tracadie Mayor Denis Losier says that structural water and sewer issues, particularly in the downtown area, are nothing new.

For the past twenty years, we've been looking for water. It's been a perilous exercise," he says.

This major challenge for his municipality has put many construction projects on hold. The improved water supply system will change all that, and he's delighted.

We want to make investments, we want to support the construction of new housing and we want to do it as quickly as possible. These 300 affordable units here in Tracadie are a good start.

A quote from New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt

New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt also believes the funding was necessary.

Tracadie is growing, but to grow economically and in terms of population, you need infrastructure," she says.
