Togo: the COSO project inaugurates a new market in Cinkassé 1
A new market was inaugurated in Bengola on Saturday, October 11, 2025, in the commune of Cinkassé 1, thanks to the Cohésion sociale (COSO) project, supported by the Fonds d'appui aux collectivités territoriales (FACT) and USAID. The five-hectare infrastructure is part of a strategy for economic development and community cohesion in northern Togo.
Comprising five sheds, a butcher's shop, a borehole, sanitary facilities and covered shelters, the Bengola market will be open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Located on the border between Togo, Ghana and Burkina Faso, it is set to become a crossroads for trade and a hub for regional integration.
The prefect of Cinkassé, Colonel Yanani Tiekabe, and the mayor, Nagnango Koundjo, welcomed the initiative, which they said would support the local economy while promoting peace and social cohesion.
As a reminder, the COSO project is a regional initiative aimed at strengthening the socio-economic and climatic resilience of border communities in the countries of the Gulf of Guinea, including Togo. In Togo, the initiative, supported by the World Bank, operates in 40 border cantons, mainly in the Savanes region, with some interventions in the Kara and Centrale regions, under the execution of the Agence nationale d'appui au développement à la base (ANADEB).
Officially launched on June 17, 2022, this project, scheduled to run until 2027, has initial funding of 33 billion FCFA, supplemented by almost14 billion FCFA to reinforce its interventions, notably via a special $23 million window dedicated to communities and refugees.
