Togo: €22.5 million from Luxembourg to accelerate the ecological transition and protect biodiversity
Togo is to receive funding of 22.5 million euros (around 14.7 billion FCFA) from Luxembourg, with the support of the European Union, to strengthen its environmental strategy under the Programme d'Appui à la Lutte contre le Changement Climatique et à la Protection de la Biodiversité (PALCC+).
This new support was validated by an agreement signed in Lomé by the Minister for the Environment, Katari Foli-Bazi, on the sidelines of a visit by a Luxembourg delegation. The facility targets urban waste management in six major cities and the preservation of priority parks such as Fazao-Malfakassa. The project includes modern sorting and recycling infrastructures, as well as reinforced measures against poaching and deforestation.
It should be noted that this support extends the initial PALCC, launched in 2017 and funded to the tune of €10.6 million by the European Union, which was already aimed at preserving natural resources and agroecology in strategic protected areas. PALCC+ extends this ambition by integrating the structuring of value chains around non-timber forest and agricultural products, hydro-agricultural development and the restoration of degraded peripheries, particularly along the Mono River.
According to PALCC's initial forecasts, nearly 17,000 households should benefit from its spin-offs, i.e. some 1.15 million direct and indirect beneficiaries throughout the region.
