Togo: FAO supports 1,000 small farmers in the Kara region
In Togo, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with its partners including the European Union, has distributed agricultural inputs to 1,000 small-scale producers in the Kara region. The operation took place last week, as part of the Strengthening Food Systems for Sustainable Access to Agricultural Inputs for Small Producers (Pro-SADI) project.
In each prefecture of the region, beneficiary farmers received 10 kg of corn seed or 20 kg of rice seed, 100 kg of NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer, and 50 kg of urea with 46% nitrogen. According to the project's promoters, the provision of these inputs is designed to boost the agricultural activities of these vulnerable farmers.
The support is helping to boost the production capacity of small-scale corn and rice growers, particularly in the Zones d'aménagement agricole planifiées (ZAAP), considered as structuring poles of the national agricultural policy.
This initiative follows on from an initial distribution phase carried out in 2024 in the Kara and Savanes regions, during which more than 7,000 small-scale producers were supported. It also complements the World Food Programme's (WFP) school feeding program, currently deployed in 50 schools in the two regions.
