On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the United Nations system in Benin celebrated World Environment Day (WED), under the key theme "Putting an end to global plastic pollution". The event was held in the conference room of the United Nations Development Programme, bringing together civil society actors, decision-makers and officials at various UNDP for the adoption of sustainable practices aimed at generating significant change in the fight against plastic pollution.

This celebration was marked by presentations detailing the global context of plastic pollution, as well as its impact on climate, food and biodiversity in Benin. The ceremony was honored by the presence of several personalities, including the Minister for the Environment and Transport, in charge of Sustainable Development, Mr. José TONATO, and the UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Titus OSUNDINA.

Madame Aminatou SAR, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Benin, delivered a poignant speech, underscoring the urgent need for action. She recalled that since 1973, World Environment Day (WED) has been a time for reflection and commitment to protecting our planet. "Every year, we are confronted with the overwhelming reality of ubiquitous plastic: in our everyday environments, our oceans, and even within ourselves. Right now, we must choose to fight this scourge", she declared.

Minister José TONATO insisted on the need to act quickly. "It's time for action, time for resolutions", he said, stressing the importance of collective cooperation.

Mr Titus OSUNDINA, UNDP Resident Representative, recalled the devastating impact of plastics on the environment, affecting flora, fauna and the food chain. With this edition of World Environment Day (WED), participants were invited to mobilize for a future without plastic pollution, by taking sustainable initiatives to preserve our planet.
