Chad: sustainable development training for young people in the Moyen-Chari region
Chad's future is being built today, and it's its young people who are holding the trowel. With this in mind, a joint mission of the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV) and the Organisation pour la Justice des Bâtisseurs Tchadiens (OJBT) organized a training session in Sarh on June 03, 2025, focusing on the role of volunteerism in building sustainable development and lasting peace.
More than a hundred young people from various Sarh neighborhoods, representing youth organizations and graduates looking for opportunities, answered the call. The aim of the session was to raise awareness, equip and inspire young people to get involved as volunteers in concrete community development actions. It wasn't just about theories, but a clear call to action and civic engagement.
Speaking at the opening, Mouederomte Mbaidedjibe, national coordinator of OJBT, emphasized the power of volunteering as a driver of change for Chadian youth: "Being a volunteer is not about working for free.
It's choosing to invest your time, energy and skills to build a fairer, more equitable and more prosperous society. "He reminded participants that sustainable development rests on three essential pillars: promoting sustainable income-generating activities; strengthening education, health and social cohesion; and protecting natural resources and the living environment.
Mouederomte Mbaidedjibe encouraged young people, particularly unemployed graduates, to keep an eye on the mission opportunities offered by the UNV programme, a gateway to the world of humanitarian action and public service.
In his turn, Zianserbe Nafou Jérémie, UNV Country Coordinator, delivered a strong message, underlining the relevance of volunteering as a tool for professional integration and local impact: "Volunteering is not an alternative by default. It's a school of life, a place of learning and a gateway to a more solid professional future. "
He highlighted the benefits of volunteering: acquisition of practical skills, personal and leadership development, creation of social and professional networks, visible contributions within local communities. The day ended in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and determination.
Several young participants expressed their desire to create or join local volunteering initiatives in their neighborhoods. "Today, I realized that I can be useful even without a job. Volunteering is a beginning, not an end. I'm motivated to act", stressed Casimir, a young geography graduate.
This training course in Sarh was not just a simple event, but a founding act of a new civic dynamic in the Moyen-Chari region. Volunteering, when understood and structured, can become a gentle but powerful weapon for building peace, creating opportunities and shaping a sustainable future. And Chad's youth, now better informed, seem ready to take up the challenge.
