The four trucks responsible for collecting household waste and the solid waste transit area known as Atom were handed over to the Brazzaville Departmental and Municipal Councils on June 3, at a solemn ceremony in Kinsoundi, in the first Makélékélé district.

These brand-new vehicles and the solid waste transit area were all financed by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), as part of a partnership with the government and Brazzaville town council. The four dump trucks will be used for the daily collection of household waste littering the alleys and avenues throughout the capital city, for storage in the Atom pre-collection sites provided in all arrondissements, prior to final disposal.

The aim of the project is to ensure the regular and permanent collection of the solid waste littering Brazzaville's arteries, in order to clean up the city and guarantee the population a pleasant, pollution-free living environment. "This project, the fruit of an exemplary partnership between Brazzaville City Council, the government represented by the Direction générale des grands travaux, and our precious technical and financial partner AFD, will enable our capital city to enjoy a dignified living environment, respectful of the environment and conducive to the well-being of its fellow citizens. The Atom projects to be implemented symbolize the continuity of a sound solid waste management policy initiated in the 1990s, with the AVOBRA project ", stressed the deputy mayor of Brazzaville, Dieudonné Bantsimba.

In the past," added the President of the Departmental and Municipal Council, "Atom had considerably improved the quality of life of Brazzavillois. The use of Atom had, he added, reduced the number of uncontrolled garbage dumps in the capital from 620 to 250. " Thanks to this equipment, we'll be able to optimize the temporary storage of solid waste, as well as its evacuation to treatment centers, thus considerably reducing the number of illegal dumps that had been a problem for many years. This will considerably reduce the number of unauthorized dumps which disfigure our urban landscape and threaten public health ", explained the deputy mayor.

Speaking on the occasion, AFD's Africa Departmental Director Sandra Kassab reiterated her institution's commitment to supporting the Congo in its urban sanitation policy, in order to offer every citizen a healthier environment. She urged all citizens to take responsibility. "... Don't throw away garbage that will clog up the roads, slow down water drainage and cause flooding. Everyone must take responsibility for their local environment and living environment, and contribute to preserving it ", emphasized AFD manager Sandra Kassab. For Oscar Otoka, General Delegate for Major Works, this project, which began with the construction of the Corniche in Brazzaville, aims to revitalize cooperation between Congo and France.
