France/Saint-Marcel - Twinning: celebrating 40 years of friendship with Romentino
On Saturday, the mayor of Saint-Marcel, Raymond Burdin, welcomed his counterpart from Romentino, Marco Caccia, to celebrate 40 years of twinning between the two towns, and above all 40 years of Franco-Italian friendship.
The town council and the twinning committee, chaired by Francette Corneloup, had pulled out all the stops to celebrate with their transalpine friends, who turned out in force for the event. 54 people made the trip from Piedmont to Saône-et-Loire.
After a festive musical parade through the town center, the 30 or so cultural and sporting associations, fire department and brass band made their way to Piazza Romentino, packed to the rafters, to listen to the traditional speeches, in which the words "friendship" and "fraternity" were often used. A delegation from Collège Vivant-Denon and another from Lycée Hilaire-de-Chardonnet recounted, in both languages, the long history linking the two communes.
The day's packed program ended with a magnificent fireworks display from the Léon-Pernot stadium and a gala dinner with a regional flavour, served in the Salle Alfred-Jarreau, which lasted well into the night.
