In Togo, the project to deploy 50,000 solar-powered street lamps throughout the country is well underway. The initiative, led by the Agence togolaise d'électrification rurale et des énergies renouvelables (AT2ER), was presented on Thursday July 25 to the authorities of the Maritime region, including prefects, mayors and institutional representatives.

They were made aware of the project at a workshop in Davié, 5 km south of Tsévié. The aim of the meeting was to inform participants about the deployment, securing and maintenance of solar street lamps in the area, and to gain their support.

Although the initiative initially focused on the northern part of the country (Savanes and Kara regions), it is now extending to the southern part.

Dr Tchapo Singo, Director General of Energy and in charge of AT2ER, stressed that the project is in line with the Togolese authorities' vision of electrifying the entire country by 2030. "The project covers 5,000 localities spread across the country's different regions, with a focus on the Savanes region", he added. The Prefect of Zio, Etsè Kodjo Kadévi, also welcomed the initiative, which he said would improve rural populations' access to public lighting.

Financed by a 40 million euro loan from the French Republic, this project is part of the Rural Solar Public Lighting Program (PEP'S Rural) of the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

Launched in April 2023 in the Binah prefecture, the project has already installed over 30,000 solar streetlamps, mainly in the Savanes and Lagions of Savanes and Kara, by early 2024 (according to information from the French company Sunna Design, responsible for the installation and maintenance of the streetlights).
