As part of its migration policy and its determination to protect its nationals living abroad, the Malian government, represented by His Excellency Ag Attaher Moussa, Minister for Malians Living Abroad and African Integration, today presided over an awareness-raising day on the risks of irregular migration. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is part of a partnership aimed at curbing this scourge and promoting legal and secure migration.

Mr. Ag Attaher Moussa took the opportunity to reaffirm the Malian government's unequivocal commitment to supporting returning migrants and offering them promising prospects in their countries of origin. He also stressed the urgent need to strengthen cooperation with destination and transit countries to better guarantee the protection of migrants and dismantle human trafficking networks.

Considering irregular migration to be a phenomenon with dramatic consequences for the migrants themselves and their families, as well as a brake on the country's socio-economic development, the Malian government has made the fight against this scourge one of its national priorities. In collaboration with its international partners, notably IOM, the country is deploying multifaceted efforts to raise awareness of the risks of irregular migration, offer viable alternatives to young people and vulnerable populations, and strengthen the protection of migrants.

As a key player in international migration governance, IOM plays a crucial role in supporting the Malian government's initiatives. The organization contributes its technical and operational expertise in various strategic areas, such as raising awareness of the risks of irregular migration, accompanying returning migrants, creating economic opportunities and combating human trafficking.

This awareness-raising day, organized jointly by the Malian government and IOM, bears witness to the shared determination of both parties to resolutely tackle the issue of irregular migration. By promoting legal and secure migration, strengthening the protection of migrants and offering viable alternatives to vulnerable populations, Mali and its international partners aim to make migration a vector of economic and social development for the country.
