Togo's authorities are preparing to launch a fund to support victims of market fires. The initiative, supported by the Faîtière de Communes du Togo (FCT), will be launched on Friday February 23 in Kara.

In concrete terms, the FCT will be launching a Crowdfunding initiative to raise funds for disaster victims who have suffered significant financial and material losses.

The setting up of this fund will be preceded by a meeting with mayors and market managers to discuss the development of a roadmap for protection and early warning mechanisms against fires in communal markets.

According to the FCT, the initiative follows on from fires at market infrastructures, notably in Kara and Lomé in January 2013, and most recently in Agoè-Assiyéyé, on December 21, 2023.

The various fires have affected thousands of merchants operating in these markets, which play an important role in the Togolese economy.
