Canada/Nicolet to remove asphalt and make way for new green spaces
The City of Nicolet is embarking on depaving work and wants to make way for more green spaces. The project has also been modified following objections.
Councillor Caroline Aubin points out that the initiative is aimed at reducing the heat islands created by the huge paved lots and parking lots. She indicates that the site behind the Pierre-Provencher arena will be the first target of the work.
We tried to see where we could carry out the depaving project. We looked among the large expanses of asphalt owned by the city. We thought maybe we could start at the arena and remove some parking spaces.

The councillor explains that, in collaboration with residents, the aim is to revegetate the site and bring a little freshness to an area that is totally asphalted. The initial work plan was modified following a survey and feedback from citizens.
Citizens really realized that we were going to remove five parking spaces," admits Caroline Aubin. Aware that the arena's parking lots are heavily used, she points out that the depaving project was eventually adapted and moved a little further on the site.
Several projects are planned for downtown Nicolet in 2024. Caroline Aubin would like to see more depaving projects. For the time being, she is not in a position to specify where this will take place.
The City of Nicolet was invited to participate in the Sous les pavés project through the Conseil régional de l'environnement du Centre-du-Québec. Similar work has been carried out in Drummondville.
