The communal committee of follow-up of the mining fund of local development of Falagountou holds, from this Thursday, March 11, 2021 in Ouagadougou, its ordinary session on the management of the mining fund of local development.

The new mining code, adopted in 2015, established a mining fund for local development. This financial base is distributed to communes hosting mining companies and to others.

In 2020, Falangountou, which houses the mining company IAMGOLD ESSAKANE S.A, received several billion CFA francs. A kitty that has been used to build infrastructure for the benefit of the communes.

To review the management of this money and identify prospects for the coming years, representatives of the municipality, the mining company, observers and civil society met in Ouagadougou during an ordinary session.

"We are gathered in the framework of a framing meeting of the Mining Fund for the development of the municipality of Falangountou. This mining fund allows most of these communities to build infrastructure," explained Maurice Konaté, High Commissioner of the Seno province.

For the mine, which has put in the common basket, between 2017 and 2020, nearly 9 billion CFA francs, the achievements are satisfactory. Several communes including Falangountou, Markoye, Gorom-Gorom and Dori, benefit from the spin-offs of the mine.

For Souleymane Boly, representative of the mine, it is also and above all important to think about the future for the populations. "We would like today to include these projects in a perspective of preparation for the afternoon by making structuring investments, particularly in the field of water, education, training, development and the environment. We want to prepare for the afternoon by making structural investments, particularly in the areas of water, education, training and the development of the local economy, which will strengthen resilience and allow for development after the mine closes," he said.

In order to achieve the objective of working for the well-being of the population with mining resources, participants will, among other things, review the functioning of the Mining Fund for Local Development, the mechanism for the development of the local economy and the development of the local population. In order to achieve the objective of working for the well-being of the populations with mining resources, the participants will, among other things, review the operation of the Local Development Mining Fund, the monitoring, communication and accountability mechanism on the Local Development Mining Fund and define a work schedule for the year 2021.
