Viet Nam

As one of the countries most affected by natural disasters and climate change, Vietnam has been quick to identify green growth as an important strategy for rapid, sustainable development.

Vietnam is accelerating green transformation, digital transformation, development of the knowledge economy, circular economy, achieving "zero net emissions" by 2050.

Inevitable development trend

Currently, Vietnam is assessed as a country with a lot of potential to develop green economic fields, thanks to its relatively good quality human resources compared to other countries in the region.

In addition, as a country with strong economic growth in the region and in Asia, Vietnam is attracting investors from all over the world to the green energy market.

At the same time, agriculture is one of the country's strengths, with impressive exports of rice, coffee, agricultural products and food.

Well aware of the importance of green growth, in 2012 the government published the National Strategy on Green Growth for the period 2011-2020, with a vision to 2050.

In 2021, the Prime Minister promulgated the National Strategy on Green Growth for the period 2021-2030, with vision to 2050, and the National Action Plan for Green Growth for the period 2021-2030.

Vietnam considers green growth essential to promote economic restructuring associated with the renewal of the growth model, improve competitiveness and resilience to external shocks, contributing directly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for carbon neutrality.

Green growth is people-centered, based on modern institutions and governance, cutting-edge science and technology, high-quality human resources, and smart, sustainable infrastructure.

The National Assembly has also enacted, supplemented and amended a number of green growth laws to mobilize green finance, green technologies and encourage green production and investment, fostering the transition to a circular economy.

Green growth for sustainable development

To date, awareness among citizens, businesses and communities of the role and significance of green growth has improved considerably, gradually changing their behavior.

Over the period 2011-2020, Vietnam has developed 750 standards to promote green growth. The emphasis is on greening production, guaranteeing environmentally-friendly principles, and investing in active pollution prevention and treatment.

Solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are widely applied in all areas. Greenhouse gas emissions from energy activities have been reduced by 12.9% compared to the normal development scenario. The percentage of industrial companies aware of cleaner production has risen from 28% in 2010 to 46.9% in 2020; the forest cover rate in 2020 has reached 42%...

According to the Minister of Planning and Investment, Nguyên Chi Dung, to achieve the goal of green growth, Vietnam must take more drastic and revolutionary measures to increase the green economy from 6.7 billion USD in 2020 to 300 billion USD in contributions per year by 2050.It is necessary to focus on the most essential areas to help Vietnam activate its natural advantages and become a developed country in all three dimensions - environment, economy and society - by 2045.

At the Vietnam 2023 Business Forum, held under the theme "The business community supports the Vietnamese government in promoting green growth" on March 19, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressed that that green growth needs an appropriate roadmap, taking into account the different conditions and capabilities of each region, locality and company.

With its potential and geo-economic position in the global supply chain, Vietnam faces great opportunities for green growth that promise great strides in socio-economic and environmental development in the near future.
