Congo/ Talangaï referral hospital: staff briefed on professional rules
On May 3, the management of the Talangaï health district referral hospital celebrated International Labor Day. To this end, the medical affairs coordination department organized a scientific morning for staff, to remind them of professional ethics and deontology.
The theme of the conference-debate was "Health ethics and deontology". It was led by Dr Guy Michel Mbemba, medical advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), under the coordination of hospital director Firmin Eyikili. The aim was to provide the hospital's public health professionals with an in-depth understanding of the ethical and deontological principles governing the operation of the health sector.
In his video presentation, Dr Guy Michel Mbemba reminded the hundred or so staff present of the basics of their profession. Speaking of ethics, he defined the concept as the science of morality, and/or a set of moral principles that underpin an individual's behavior.
Deontology, for its part, he told them, implies a set of rules, duties and obligations that every agent is bound to respect in the exercise of his or her profession. The aim is to enable staff at the Talangaï referral hospital to understand the fundamental principles of their profession, so that they are able to apply them to guarantee good patient care.
He told them that a health worker is first and foremost a public person of good sense and morals, devoid of deviant and uncivil behavior. "A health worker is above all a role model in society. He works on the basis of internal regulations and must be seen and considered as an honest man by his way of being, by his professional conscience. They must be honest and fair, and work in a spirit of fairness and respect for confidentiality and the protection of medical data ", he stressed.
The speaker warned Talangaï hospital staff against corruption, abuse of power, harassment, lack of solidarity and other bad practices that tarnish the image of a health worker.
"As you know, Talangaï hospital is much criticized by patients for certain inappropriate behaviors. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to organize this scientific morning to remind staff of the rules of the profession, in particular professional ethics and deontology, so that we can provide patients with quality care. This day was essentially pedagogical, before considering disciplinary aspects to help them get their act together ", concluded hospital director Firmin Eyikili.
