In the wake of International Literacy Day, the General Directorate of Literacy and Non-Formal Education launched an awareness campaign on September 9 in Brazzaville targeting all segments of society, particularly those who dropped out of school early or who never had the opportunity to attend school.

The60th International Literacy Day is being celebrated this year under the theme “Literacy for People, the Planet, and Prosperity.” The awareness campaign that has been launched puts the message behind this theme into action, said Rémy Alain Blaise Boumba, Director- -General of Literacy and Non-Formal Education.

The thirteen teams deployed for this campaign in markets and public squares across all districts of Brazzaville are on a mission to promote literacy, he continued. “These teams are designed to reach out directly to the public. They explain the importance of learning and guide people toward the opportunities offered by our literacy and non-formal education programs,” explained Rémy Alain Blaise Boumba.

The message is simple: “It’s never too late to learn,” because learning is a lifelong process. Literacy, the director general emphasized, is neither a favor nor a source of stigma. It is an opportunity, a right, and a means of strengthening autonomy and socio-professional integration. “Listen to the people, take the time to understand their concerns, and refer them to the appropriate resources—literacy centers when necessary and special schools,” he said as he sent the outreach teams on their way.
