Canada/Montreal boosts home adaptation assistance for people with disabilities

The City of Montreal announces that it is increasing the financial assistance it provides to disabled people to help them adapt their homes to their reality and needs.

In a press release issued on Friday, Mayor Valérie Plante's office explains that the measure is designed to facilitate and accelerate the processing of MDAP grant applications.

In particular, these major adjustments are designed to make the program more accessible to a greater number of beneficiaries, reduce waiting times and offer better coverage of the needs of our clients.and provide better coverage of adaptation needs, in a context where construction costs continue to rise.

Under this program enhancement, disabled people will be able to receive up to $24,000 in municipal subsidies to have certain work carried out in their homes that is not considered too complex, without having to submit an occupational therapy report.

For work requiring the services of an occupational therapist, disabled people can receive up to $50,000 per eligible application. This represents a 43% increase over the current maximum subsidy, according to the mayor's office.

Benoit Dorais, vice-president of the executive committee and responsible for housing in Montreal, adds that the number of employees responsible for processing PADM applications has doubled since 2021.

The city claims to have paid out $11.6 million to people with disabilities under this program since 2020.

By improving the Adaptation de domicile program, we hope to ensure that a greater number of residents with disabilities can live in housing that is well adapted to their needs.

According to the Ville de Montréal website, to be eligible for this subsidy, the applicant must be a disabled person within the meaning of the Act to ensure the exercise of the rights of disabled persons with a view to their educational, occupational and social integration.

Adaptation work must be required in the applicant's home.

The applicant must not have received a home adaptation subsidy in the last five years.

The applicant must not have received financial assistance for home adaptation from any other organization, government or public or private insurance or compensation plan.
