In order to accompany the environmental actors of the port sector, the Support Project for the Development of the Port Sector (PASport) of the Belgian Development Agency (Enabel) donated equipment to three public structures. The handover ceremony took place on Monday 31 January 2022 at the PASport project headquarters in the Autonomous Port of Cotonou, in the presence of the structures concerned.

Three Toyota 4X4 pick-up vehicles went to three different structures. These are the Special Forestry Brigade of the Port, the Plant Quarantine Fumigation Center of the Port and the Laboratory of Water Science and Technology and Environment (LSTEE). In addition to the vehicle, the Port's Plant Quarantine Fumigation Center received a set of 680 phytosanitary inspector's manuals and a subsidy agreement for action research at the port was signed with the Laboratory of Water and Environmental Sciences and Techniques (LSTEE). This support to the PASport project, which is part of the implementation of the environmental policy of the port sector, aims to strengthen the capacity of control structures involved in the port chain, to change practices and to improve the quality of the environment. The aim is to strengthen the capacities of the control structures involved in the port chain, to develop national practices in terms of control of environmental standards in the port area, and to develop research actions on the fight against pollution and nuisances on the port platform. The three structures are partners in the PASport project on the environmental aspect of the port sector.

With the Port Brigade, Martin Deroover, the chargé d'affaires at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium stressed that the project pays particular attention to monitoring compliance by shipping companies and other port actors of international conventions focusing on environmental issues. The port, being the gateway to and from Benin, is the place par excellence for commercial traffic, hence the need to put in place procedures to ensure that the export of animal and plant specimens respects international standards. Enabel is therefore accompanying the Special Brigade of the port in order to improve its efficiency. In the same framework, Enabel is supporting the Port's Plant Quarantine and Fumigation Control Center in order to strengthen phytosanitary control of plants and agricultural inputs entering the port. As for the Laboratory of Sciences and Techniques of Water and Environment (LSTEE), Enabel's support aims to facilitate the laboratory's missions, which are, among others, the development of a diagnosis of the water quality in the port. The support of Enabel aims to facilitate the missions of the laboratory, which are, among others, the development of a diagnosis of pollution in the port sector, the implementation of research projects on pollution issues related to the port activity ...

For Professor Mama Daouda, Director of the National Institute of Water, this contribution of Enabel will help achieve the objectives of the center. He expressed his thanks and appreciation to Enabel. The same feeling of gratitude from Justin Roland Zoglobossou, the director of plant production for whom the gesture will contribute to the improvement of plant performance services for a better preservation of the national territory. Colonel Emmanuel Gbédji promised, on behalf of the Director of Water, Forestry and Hunting, to make good use of the equipment received.
