Belgium/Châtelineau: containers to raise awareness of illegal dumping
Containers were set up on Place Wilson in Châtelineau. A two-day action to raise awareness of the problem of illegal dumping.
Three containers litter Place Wilson in Châtelineau. Residents can dispose of up to two cubic meters of clutter. Gaetano seized the opportunity to lighten his house. "It's more like electro clutter, an old hi-fi, bits of wood, a little bit of everything.
Objective: to raise awareness of illegal dumping. It's a problem that Marie-Pierre Martin knows well, as a waste disposal officer. "It's very, very frequent, even more so in Charleroi. I work in Châtelet, Châtelineau and Bouffioux," she says. Part of her job is to observe illegal dumping, then investigate. "As soon as we discover an illegal dump, we investigate to try and find the perpetrator. We also have cameras located around the city, which enable us to identify the perpetrator. We also sometimes get tips. So, we interview people and we can then trace the perpetrator."
These deposits are caused as much by private individuals as by professionals. "We find everything, but the deposit that made the biggest impression on me was a deposit by a catering professional who came to dump cubic meters of meat."
A certain cost for the city
Samuel Orru, environment alderman for the town of Châtelet, is concerned about the increase in the phenomenon: "It's on the rise just about everywhere in the kingdom, unfortunately. And to give you some figures, these 350 - 400 kilos a day that are evacuated by our teams, which represents 100 tons a year."
"It comes at a cost, given that we as a city have to go and find these illegal dumps, via our workers. So we have to pay the workers, we have to pay the vehicles that go out there, but then we have to process the waste, via the intermunicipal company. This cost is passed on to the commune. Indirectly, it affects citizens' wallets through their annual waste tax."
