Morocco/Rabat: Experts discuss new models of data governance

A host of Moroccan and foreign experts discussed Saturday in Rabat, the new models of data governance and the problem of sharing data protection. Gathered at a meeting organized by the National Commission for the Supervision of Personal Data Protection (CNDP), in partnership with the Rabita Mohammadia Ulemas, under the theme "personal data, civilization of sharing and respect for privacy", participants discussed a number of topics related, in particular, with the Open Data and Data altruism.

Speaking at the first panel of this conference, held on the occasion of International Data Protection Day 2023, Grimaud Valat, a partner at DTMV Avocats, and rapporteur of thestudy on Data Altruism, diagnosed the state of societal mistrust in the face of digital data sharing, citing the example of applications for the fight against the Covid-19 virus.

In this sense, he highlighted the need to conduct a huge educational effort with society around the trust framework, with a view to changing perceptions and bringing people back to a data sharing movement.

Sharing data and securing its control must be done hand in hand, right from the design stage, emphasized Eric Salobir, president of the Human Technology Foundation, noting that sharing unprotected data initially weakens its protection.

Despite the difficulty of implementing it today, Mr. Salobir highlighted the relevance of the concept of Data altruism, which focuses on the voluntary sharing of data for the public good and to improve research and public policy.

As an example, he noted that the health data collected are exploited at a low level, while many of these data can be collected anonymously and shared to enrich research and societal welfare.
