Côte d'Ivoire/Zouan-Hounien: Actions for a better involvement of local communities in the management of the Ity mining area

Involve communities in the management of local affairs in order to ensure that they benefit more from the mining of Ity, especially women and young people. This is the objective of the NGO "Actions pour le Développement Social" and the Cellule de Veille Citoyenne de Zouan-Hounien.

In this vein, these structures organized a series of actions, from November 22 to November 27, 2021, in the department of Zouan-Hounien. As part of a dynamic to support social cohesion and social accountability in the governance of the Ity mining area, these actions were an opportunity for the organizers to promote social cohesion and citizen participation.These actions were an opportunity for the organizers to promote social cohesion and citizen participation in the normality of relations between local residents and representatives of public services in the Ity mining area. This, through a community dialogue.

The "Actions pour le Développement Social", in collaboration with the Cellule de Veille Citoyenne de Zouan-Hounien organized three events from Monday 22 to Saturday 27 November 2021. These are, among others, a "Training workshop for local residents and Osc of the mining area of Ity on the structuring of advocacy actions through citizen monitoring and access to information" on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 November 2021. This first activity allowed participants to agree to focus their advocacy efforts on increasing the benefits of mining in Ity for the benefit of youth and women, especially by financing their Income Generating Activities (IGA). Secondly, a "Community Dialogue on the Legal Framework for Access to Public Information", which was held on Thursday 25 November 2021. It highlighted the urgent need to improve communication in the management of the Local Mining Development Committee (Cdlm) of the Ity gold mine.

Called "Social and collective mobilization of local communities on the citizen monitoring process", the latest action took place on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 November 2021, in the eight impacted villages and public services of Zouan-Hounien. It allowed Ads and Cvc to increase the knowledge of the various stakeholders on the positive effects of citizen monitoring.

According to those in charge, Kouakou Léonard, Yao Emmanuel and Léonard Ntonga Mvondo respectively coordinator of the project in charge of knowledge, head of the said project and monitor-evaluator, all these activities are part of the "Citizen Monitoring" project.All these activities are part of the project "Promoting the view of citizens, namely the communities living near mining areas on the management activities of Cdlm and co-management of infrastructure and services rendered".

Moreover, financed by the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) through the Leadership and Initiatives of Non-State Actors Project (Liane2), the said project is the result of cooperation between the European Union and the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire.

Note that "Actions for Social Development" is an Ivorian civil society organization actively engaged in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Created in 2018, it intervenes particularly in the governance of extractive resources, the defense of the rights of vulnerable and underrepresented groups, the promotion of full employment and decent work and the preservation of the environment.
