Canada

Charlottetown residents can obtain municipal financial assistance to have stumps removed from their lawns after last fall's storm Fiona.

The provincial government was offering homeowners help to prune or remove storm-damaged trees, but not to remove stumps.

We heard from many residents concerned about the cost and safety of stumps remaining on their property," says Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown, quoted in a release.

Eligibility criteria

Eligible stumps must be located on private property within municipal boundaries. Businesses, institutions and rental properties are not eligible.

Stumps must be over 30 cm in diameter and located in the front yard. Those in the rear yard may be eligible if they are deemed dangerous or partially uprooted.

Residents are responsible for coordinating stump removal by the company of their choice.

Up to $500 rebate

Bills of $999 or less may qualify for a $200 discount. Invoices of $1,000 or more may be eligible for a rebate of $500.

Discounts are granted on a first-come, first-served basis, according to eligibility and available budget, the release states.

People can apply through the City of Charlottetown's website or by contacting the City at 902 566-5548.
